They are native to a single location on Earth: the freshwater Lake Xochimilco and its surrounding canals near Mexico City, although they were historically found in other lakes in the Mexican highlands, including Lake Chalco.
Axolotls vary in color, with wild types typically being brown, green, or black with spots, while captive-bred individuals often display pink, albino, golden, or black morphs.
Is it impossible for them to be blue? Yes. Are ours blue anyway? Yes! Message me with what colors you want, it's your print to customize!
The name "axolotl" comes from the Aztec god Xolotl, who was said to transform into a salamander, and the word translates to "water monster" in the Nahuatl language. The way to remember the mostly correct pronunciation: Where there is fire, there is "ash a lot."
